On Sunday, July 21, President Joe Biden announced that he was officially pulling out of the 2024 election. A lengthy statement was released on the president’s Twitter/X account. The well worded, heavily vetted, statement didn’t give us much in terms of an explanation for suddenly dropping out. Shortly after it’s release, President Biden endorsed Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee. Is the president’s decision to end his campaign for re-election too late? I’d say we’re about four years late.
If you’re reading this, I don’t care who you vote for. I’m just a concerned citizen. The country feels like a massive but rudderless ship, bobbing in the ocean. We’ve stalled in a vast sea after 2020, the year of performative promise. Remember when Nancy Pelosi was pictured kneeling while wearing a kente cloth stole? All that yapping and line dancing, only to later moonwalk all our progress. (Sidebar: Hol’ on. Remember the crying celebrities all that “I didn’t know it was so bad for you”. They changed Aunt Jemima name to some generic shit, changed her face, then dressed her like a quaker.)
My initial emotion reading the president’s statement was annoyance. The first paragraph is dedicated to all that he’s accomplished. If your presidential accomplishments can be summarized in one paragraph, you either wordsmithed the hell out of that statement or you didn’t accomplish much. The president punctuated the statement with, “America has never been in better positioned to lead than we are today.” Brate, I was not born yesterday.
Joseph R. Biden is a mediocre president in a time where this country needs great. Read every statement released by any prominent Democrat. You’ll see Biden be described as “America's most consequential presidents” or his legacy as "unmatched in modern history." With all due respect, anyone elected in the thralls of a global pandemic would be America’s most consequential president. He maintained status quo when the people were in the streets crying out for more. Let’s give him a gold watch, a Coke and a smile.
As of Monday, July 22, Vice-President Kamala Harris seems to be the party choice. She’s received millions of dollars in donations overnight and endorsements from some of ya favorite pop artists. If anyone wants to pour cold water on her momentum, be my guest but I’ll refrain. We have a chance to elect the first Black Woman President. If the plan is to maintain status quo, she will be a mediocre president with a raised pinky. My hope is that she will be America’s most consequential president, but I’ve learned that Hope is just that.
