In Blazing Saddles our protagonist is a charismatic black sheriff. John Wayne was a grizzly old man who didn’t talk much or smile much. He was the embodiment of American masculinity. Sheriff Bart was played by Cleavon Little. He wasn’t white, he wasn’t serious, and he wasn’t the embodiment of American masculinity. Shortly after receiving his title as Sheriff, Sheriff Bart traveled into town riding on horseback. The people were anticipating a John Wayne figure and instead they got Sheriff Bart. While on horseback, the camera zoomed in on Sheriff Bart’s bag. It was a Gucci satchel. The sheriff had a man bag.

englewood was like a home away from home. its where my parents grew up and where my grandparents still live. i stayed in beverly and my block was full of older people. the only children on my block were white. there was another black kid but he was more on the other end of the spectrum. i didn’t hang out with them after tee-ball practice. maybe my parents withheld all my invites to the white kids’ birthday parties because i never went. the kids in englewood and roseland looked more like me. i didn’t talk like them yet but i was learning.

’m always dubious of movies about black people and even mores when its about a historical black person. stories change hands so much in hollywood, its like playing the telephone game. the first person says a phrase to the person next to them and its their job to pass the message along verbatim. at the end of the game after the phrase has been disseminated from person to person, the message is usually different from its original form. i don’t know if you’ve noticed but most of these movies follow a certain pattern. 42, Marshall, Get on Up, and Hidden Figures are films that have been recently released that fit into the pattern.

i don’t know if another school has taken its place in roseland. i don’t know of a private school ran by black people that specifically aimed to teach black children. there isn’t much of a point to this. i’ve just lost a lot of important people from my childhood. when my parents weren’t around these people took care of me. they looked after me as if i were their own. as i’ve grown up, i’ve realized that this isn’t normal. i want this to be normal. damn i’m getting old.
